Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are
(Insider note: Amy Cuddy is up the road in Camden, Maine this weekend, presenting at PopTech conference.)
Here's the real scoop. This social psychologist is describing something our ancestors always knew. Indeed, her research barely scratches the surface of the power and possibility of body language and power poses. Using body postures to access trance states and tap into spiritual messages and power is an ancient shamanic practice. It is a practice of Divine Embodiment. Spirit dwells in us, and teaches us everything we need to know.
The late Dr. Felicitas Goodman of the Cuyamungue Institute studied Sacred Posing in ritual states, as depicted in art tens of thousands of years old, and as currently practiced by people on Earth. She discovered that modern industrialized human beings could access states of awareness and insight using sacred postures in ritual settings. We humans have always known that our bodies are messengers of God within us.
Dr. Cuddy makes the "power posture" simple and accessible for us to begin. Don't wait for a stressful job interview. I suggest you adopt a power pose the next time you have a difficult problem to solve, desire to reach a new height of ecstacy and pleasure, or want to open yourself to inspiration.
