Turning off the Electric Fence

I am an expert on shame. I lived inside a very small playing field of my own creation, fenced in by shame I didn't even know about.

A couple of years ago I confronted my own shame for perhaps the first time in my life. The home  and community--Southern Baptists--operated on shame. It was how good people behaved, honoring the Lord with their shame before him. My shame was so ingrained that I felt shame about being alive. Having any desire. All of my life felt like a f-uck up.

Not very DIVA of me, right? YES it’s total, full-frontal DIVA. I admit I did not have the courage to strip myself bare and face my shame. But when Divine Love itself peeled away my defenses, I stood there, naked in the presence of my Shame. I stared into my Shame. I rebuked it, which means, I denied its power over me. I recognized the great boulder that had blocked my path all my life had shrunk to the size of a tiny pebble. I picked it up for a souvenir, and walked on down the path. I wrote about this powerful moment in my blog. You can read it here.

In that moment I learned that shame is the doorway to transformation. I was elated. I thought I was done.

hahahaha! I was not done with shame, though blessedly, I usually recognize the signs that shame is blocking me from fulfilling my desire and living my luscious, powerful life. I can move through the door to my transformation--or not, as I choose. Shame is subtle, and persuasive, and sly.

It is at the root of resistance.

Chester Mainard, an extraordinary teacher about the body and soul, expressed it this way.

One of the tricky things about shame is that it is often invisible to the person experiencing it. Shame creates an “electric fence” within ourselves. Once you get shocked two or three times you stay back from the fence. The electricity can get turned off but you still don’t go near the fence anymore. When we are operating in our comfort zone we are actually operating inside the shame. Shame operates by avoiding the feeling of it, and it is tricky sometimes to notice what you are avoiding: “Oh, I’m not feeling anything right now.” That may be true or maybe shame is operating so well that you’ve learned to stay well inside that fence, not taking any risks that may result in the activation of the shame.

Shame’s invisible fence looks like avoidance, passivity, disarray, invisibility, hiding.
Shame looks like settling. I have heard shame say things like this:
“I am not that unhappy.”
“My se x life is O.K.”
“I am so busy!”
“I don’t need any help.”
“They won’t make it without me.”
“I can’t risk anything right now.”

Are you living inside an electric fence? How small is your comfort zone? Stretch out your hand. Let your imagination fly into your desire. How far does it go before shame talks you down?

What limits have your created on your pleasure? Your income? Your impact on the world? Inside your electric fence, you are kept small, in at least one area of your life, and probably many. Stop dying before you are dead. Stop limiting the magnificent possiblities of your life.

Where is your switch to turn off that electric fence? Where is your doorway to transformation and your fully-lived magnificent life?

A Question about Men

On the Feminine Magik call for women last week, we fielded lots of questions about women’s sexuality and experience of relationship. Women also asked about men’s sexuality. Probing the mystery of our differences is a powerful desire for us Divas.

A woman asked this question about male sexuality, and I think men will be interested to hear the answer too.

Does ejaculation deplete a man’s life force?

Life force is an infinite resource that cannot be depleted. The capacity to tap into life force may become diminished, impaired, or cease (death). Modern life is full of toxins that interfere with the flow of Life Force energy: stress, poor health, environmental toxins, toxic relationships, trauma, toxic beliefs about sexuality, low self-esteem. Any work you do to enhance your sexual energy requires that you look at everything that’s going on in your life.

This question of ejaculation depleting life force energy arises from Asian Daoist and Tantric systems of sacred sexual practice. Some schools of thought teach that frequent ejaculation depletes a man’s life force, leaving him weakened and vulnerable to illness. Some also teach that excess ejaculation may interfere with attaining enlightenment through sexual intercourse. These varied traditions are  ancient, complex, and can be confusing. Yet they have thousands of years of knowledge about the body, mind, and spirit connection to sexuality and are a great gift and resource to people now. Some of the healing practices I use are inspired by Daoist and Tantric traditions.

When I work with men, I teach how orgasm and ejaculation are two separate things. Orgasm sometimes brings on ejaculation. Semen is a nutrient-rich carrier of the male seed of life. It’s marvelous gift to a man, his partner, the earth, and future generations. When ejaculation accompanies a man’s orgasm, his semen needs to be treated in a sacred manner, honoring the gift to life that it is.

Feeling orgasm independent of ejaculation is a whole new experience for most men. I show men how to delay ejaculation to allow the body to feel more erotic energy, sensation, and pleasure. Any man can learn to manage his body and energy to feel expanded orgasm. It is a skill that can be mastered, and the possibilities for healing, feeling, creativity and power are infinite.

To answer answer the question, No, I do not believe that ejaculation alone depletes a man’s life force as long as he is engaging in orgasmic ejaculation with loving consciousness. It is other mental, physical, and emotional toxicity that can harm a man’s sexuality.

I also believe that life force is more available for creativity, strength, and meeting challenges when a man can also learn to experience orgasm independently of ejaculation. It is by coming to know this vital energy that toxicity and trauma can be healed.

So you’re asking, why did your high school football coach warn you not to have sex on the night before the big game? Because he wanted you on the field like a killer, not a lover! It wasn’t your life force, but your aggression he wanted to preserve. Orgasm releases oxytocin, which makes a man roll over and fall asleep, hopefully with his arms wrapped around his beloved. This creates an emotional bond of love, which is very good for a man’s health, his community, and his children. And that’s a topic for another blog post!

The Missing First Step in Manifesting

This holiday I had opportunity to meet many new people. If we sat and talked for a while, I often posed this question, in love and genuine curiosity:

What do you want? or What do you desire most in your life?

We've been taught to put way more energy into suppressing our desires than to expressing and manifesting them. My belief is that "Law of Attraction" practices and even coaching programs don't work for some of us because we are running and Anti-Desire program in our unconscious.

The Rapture of Water

Today I completed a commitment to swim in natural water every day in September. Summer in Maine this year was uncharacteristically hot and dry. I enjoyed swimming as I have not in 16 years of living here. On September 5th, after a spectacular swim in Hobbs Pond, I decided that I would swim every day till September 30 in natural water in Maine.

As goals go, it was not particularly challenging or dramatic. The weather held, and it’s been a mild equinox, though the ocean, river, and pond are much colder than they were on Labor Day. When my car was broken I had to walk from my house to Hobbs Pond, down the long hill on Hatchet Mountain, and back up again. I thought it would be hard, but it was a piece of cake, just over a mile one way. I’d have done it more often except I usally swam before or after a trip to town on errands. I swam mostly in Hobbs Pond because it is close to home. I went to Lincolnville Beach an average of once a week, when the weather was sunny, and I could catch the tide right for swimming. Megunticook River off Shirt Tail Point was fun for variety. I visited a friend on China Lake for a good sunset swim, and on a trip down to Brunswick, I swam in the lagoon at Reid State Park. The ocean, lake, and river all had a different energy and feeling. They all have in common they are living, wild water.

Lincolnville Beach

I love the way my body changed over the 26 days. Swimming every day, my body sculpted and stretched and I see and feel muscles in my legs, arms, and torso I haven’t seen since my twenties. I feel better than I have in my whole life. Nothing hurts anywhere. I remember how much I love to swim and be in the water. My swim conditioning makes me want to swim farther and be in the water longer, even as falling temperatures make long swims unwise. I am so comfortable in the water I cavort! I feel otter-like. (The otters roll their eyes at me when they read this.)

It was never about the exercise. It was about doing something I enjoy for as long as I can. It was about being in the water. It became about being with the water.

I realized that I love the water because of touch. The water touches me everywhere. My body hides no secrets from the water. I noticed how different water touches me. The ocean, river, and lake all touch me in a different way. Wind-whipped water has a different hand than placid, smooth water. Cold touches differently than warm, salt than fresh. Morning, afternoon and night water feel different.

Water carries. It lifts. It supports me as I move through it. It makes room for me. I float.
It is easy to swim in the ocean. The ocean, even on a quiet day, is always actively lifting and carrying. One windy day in Hobbs Pond I felt lifted like that. The more relaxed I am the more the water carries me. It touches me all over and carries me.

Megunticook River at Shirt Tail Point

In the waters, I became part of the changing season. I learned the personality of the beach in Lincolnville, the tides, the rocks, plants, and animals. I enjoyed the work of swimming in Megunticook River. It’s a small river, but swimming upriver I felt myself pull against the current. The moving water has a delicious energy. I loved swimming in the colored water as the river reflected the leaves changing color on the banks. I love how available the river is, grateful to the Town of Camden for making a public park access. In  late September, I had it to myself.

I found an affection for Hobbs Pond for the first time in my 16 years in Hope.  I learned its moods, the way the wind whips up its length to the public landing, and how placid it can be in the morning. I felt the colors on Hatchet Mountain and the pond shores change along with the water temperature. I love how swimming out from shore feels exciting and energized, and swimming back in to shore feels a little flat and dull. I’ll meet Hobbs Pond earlier next season. I want to swim to somewhere. I’d like to swim its length.

My description is deliberately simple. It was simple to show up everyday to swim. What is not so simple is the depth of the medicine. Without planning it, I became intimate with water. I became a Mer person. Day after day, it embraced and sustained me through a difficult passage. I felt the rapture of water.

When you commit to something, it becomes a spiritual practice. It took me till today to get that. For the first time in my life, I get that. The beauty of it as that I didn’t have to do anything but swim and enjoy myself everyday to have the spiritual practice.

Giving myself the pleasure of being in the water every day is ALL there is to it. Being with the pleasure is the only thing there is.

Meeting Shame and Living to Tell About It

What story are you telling yourself about who you are? Who wrote it? Who built the house you live in?

I've been doing some deep inner exploring, and I discovered that I am living in a house built by shame. It was running my life in ways I was unaware of. I share this with you because it's a difficult process, and I want some help. I share it because I know you've got your struggles with shame too. Shame makes us believe we are alone, and we are not alone. We are here together. Shame makes us believe we are unworthy, and we are so worthy!

Here is how it begins:

I rebuke shame!

By rebuking shame, I take it off the throne of my life, where it ruled me.
By rebuking shame, I engage shame in the light.
All my thoughts, actions, desires, and feelings were filtered through Shame.

Shame says, I am unworthy, unloveable, bad, beyond redemption, in need of fixing, and everything I do is wrong, or tainted by failure.

Shame says that my natural response to being alive is wrong.

The Being of Shame is abroad in the world. Shame is a member of my emotional family. Shame holds love at bay with a stiff arm, with such vehemence!

With all the strength of its desire for love, Shame denies loves efficacy to heal it.

What happens when I call shame into the light and wrestle with it? If I do battle with it, I will discover shame is a hydra, growing two new terrifying heads for every one I cut off. Or I will discover shame is the Medusa, who immobilized me, like stone.

No, battle will not defeat shame.

I must be naked and unarmed in the presence of shame. I call it into the light by rebuking its power over me, and I call its name--

SHAME!  You are but one of the many feelings I have been blessed with. You became strong in my life because in your ferocity, you seemed at one time to be a powerful ally. Yet you keep love at bay. I meet you as a feeling I have. I see you as a beautiful black and white striped pebble I keep in my medicine bag with other feelings. When I feel you, I will touch that pebble.

Geneen Roth says that "All any feeling wants is to be met with kindness, to be touched."

What if I meet Shame with curiosity?

What is your role, Shame? Are you present to remind me to spend time with my Divine Lover? To return to prayer and ceremony? To anoint myself with Magnificence? To touch my womb, my vulva, and listen to the oracle?

I tremble naked in the light, without the armor, without the masquerade, without the elaborate house--the Stuff of Ego, the detritus of an unfelt life.

Fear nibbles my nipples. I walk, I stand, I walk. I acknowledge that fear too is a feeling. Feelings are not dangerous. They are themselves experiences of life.

I feel.

Do I need to dress myself?
I am clothed in light and Being. I am clothed in rainbow. I am clothed in mud. I am clothed in the hands and kisses of my fellow Beings.

What is Shame when it is met with kindness, and seen, touched, and loved?
It is Magnificence.

I am magnificent because I rebuked shame and called it into the light.

THE SACRED IN SACRED SEXUALITY

The term sacred sexuality is in a way misleading because it can be interpreted to imply that sometimes sex is sacred and sometimes it is not. As human beings we are born with certain instincts and urges such as the urge to eat when we are hungry and to sleep when we are tired. We also have a sex drive. All three of these natural urges are necessary for our survival. Food and sleep keep us alive and so the innate need for them is an important part of our being human, so much so that it the urge is automatic. Go long enough without food and your hunger increases and increases until you can think of nothing else but how hungry you are and/or you will waste away and die. In the case of sleep you will eventually fall asleep whether you consciously want to or not.

As humans, our sex drive also has a purpose. Yes, it helps us keep our species going by creating new life, but it has another purpose as well; it is a homing signal, a reminder of from where we originated and of what is important in life. In fact, our sex drive is so strong and so important to express that it will be expressed in one way or another. Even if we try to tame it, express it in only in ways we think are socially acceptable, hold it in due to shame, fear of what others will think, cultural conditioning or other reasons, it will express, just perhaps in a way that is unfulfilling or even violent in its misdirection. Sex in and of itself is not dangerous, it is how we approach it, stifle it, misdirect it and color it with our own agendas based on past experiences, beliefs, etc. that make sex seem like less than the innate, beautiful, fulfilling experience that it ultimately is.

One of the reasons we crave sex so much is because of how wonderful it feels. This is such common knowledge that it is woven into our culture in just about every way possible. It is on our minds a lot (have you ever read one of those studies asking people how often they think about sex?!) and it is even part of how many of the products we use are promoted. Sex is part of how we respond to the people around us, and based on their response to us, we form opinions about ourselves. Sex is probably part of most every interaction we have, one way or another. It is a mental process as much as a physical thing that we “do” with someone. It is a foundation for how we feel about ourselves and how we take that sense of self into the world on a day to day basis. You can even think of sex as a currency or current of energy that we exchange in how we perceive others, how we respond to them based on that perception and how we feel about ourselves as a result. And interaction and exchange takes place, even if it is very subtle.

One of the gifts of having a sex urge is that it drives us to meet that need which often brings us together with others who also wish to meet that need. In the sexual interaction, an energy (current) exchange takes place physically but it again also takes place in how we feel about ourselves and the other(s) based on the interaction. Our past experiences have created expectations of ourselves, of our partner(s) and of the experience created together. Where it falls short of fulfillment, it is easy to attribute this to something about men, women, sex, the person or people you are with or to yourself. Thus sex has the capacity to stir up a lot of baggage, which we often continually perpetuate upon ourselves and each other. When this happens, sex can feel unfulfilling both physically and emotionally. Regardless of how much sex we may be having, if it is not fulfilling, it just leaves us wanting more and more as we try to get our fill. And if we have sex while feeling lack of trust, past hurts, repressed anger, etc. it is hard to really enjoy it fully because we are closed off to what makes sex most juicy (openness to experience it). This is similar to how some people approach food or other substances or experiences. More is not necessarily better. Nor is variety in terms of partners necessarily going to bring about the fulfillment we seek, it is how we choose to experience something that makes it fulfilling and sustaining. Experiencing the sacred in sexuality is a path of sexual and life fulfillment because it helps us to experience the whole of what sex is and what we are. Once we experience this wholeness, everything can be fulfilling if we so choose. Sex is never quite the same again.

Sacred sexuality can be thought of like stopping to smell the roses. Life is full of colors, textures, small details, tastes, sounds and more that are always present when you choose to take notice. A piece of fruit can be savored for its color, shape, size, scent, texture, taste and how it is presented (among other things). Or in a hurry to feed a hunger, we can gulp it down and not notice any of this, and feeling like we are still hungry for more of something. Sacred sexuality brings our attention to what is already present in our own bodies, in the bodies of others (if you choose to share the experience with others) and in what is created between people in the moment. In this regard sex is somewhat like dancing. An exchange of current (energy) takes place that is not just two or more people, it is something in and of itself that contains and includes whoever is present as one experience together. What’s more is that as you become aware of the sensations in your own body, it has a positive impact on the body of your partner(s) and of the overall experience.

Some people equate sacred sexuality with specific types of practices and/or techniques such as those of Tantra. Tantra is one approach to sacred sexuality but there are others such as Kama Sutra, Healing Love and more. Also, sacred sexuality can be experienced and enjoyed any time a person or people chose to savor the sensations and experience of pleasure in the moment. It can be independent of any specific approach or practices. Many people find the practices/techniques to be helpful in learning how to be aware and present to what is happening in the moment instead of stuck in the mental and emotional baggage and limiting self beliefs from the past. Since this type of conditioning is so much a part of how we interact, I believe learning and using practices and techniques such as breathwork, sound, eye contact and body movements are extremely valuable and helpful. However, it is important to keep in mind that these practices and techniques are not the full picture of sacred sexuality; they are just ways to be present and open to the fullness and wholeness of the moment. Many people equate sacred sexuality with techniques and lose track of sacred sexuality in its whole and ultimate form, which is the gift of being present (presence).

When people are truly present to themselves and each other sexually, their thoughts and baggage melts away and they become aware of the life force that sustains and unites them. The experience of divinity from which they came opens inside and around them and the feeling is exhilarating and pleasurable and much more. It is as if your senses open up even more and you feel pleasure/divinity/life force in greater depth and breadth because you are open to feeling more of it. It is always there and it is limitless. Sacred sexuality opens you to more of what is always present and this openness extends beyond “having sex” to an openness in everyday life, although the sex is really wonderful and that is a great reason for sacred sexuality in and of itself!

One of the great things about sacred sexuality is that you can choose to experience it at any time. Sexuality is life force energy (current) and it is always present. With practice you will be able to feel and enjoy your sexuality any time you wish, even if you are not with any other person or not in a relationship. Sacredness is about how you perceive things, about the openness to experiencing the divine within and around you. Any time you experience life force energy, you are experiencing sexuality. And when you shift your perception to go beyond mental conditioning, baggage, etc. by being present to the sensations in the moment, you are tuning into the sacred. Sacredness and sexuality are one…if you choose to experience them as such. From the experience of sacredness and sexuality being one, you can sense the sacredness in all experiences and all people. In life and in the bedroom, sacred sexuality can include things that many people would not typically define as sacred. However, if you are open to experiencing sacredness, you will learn from experience that it is everywhere. It is life changing and ultimately I believe it is what sacred sexuality is truly about.

A friend of mine once told me that sacred sexuality is not so much about knowing the sacredness in sex, but more about knowing that sexuality is the foundation of everything sacred in life and about life. He dreams of the day when not only would sacred be used to define sexuality but sexuality would be used to define and understand sacredness. Humanity has separated itself from sexuality; and when we objectify sexuality, we objectify ourselves by cutting ourselves off from our sacred source. Sacred sexuality is about being present to the fullness, the perfection, of our experience as human beings with our hearts and senses open to the depth and breadth that life is.

I know what you are going through.

I was raised in a conservative Baptist farm community in the South. There were a lot of wonderful things about this early life. It was by no means a deprived childhood. But sex was something as a young Christian girl I had to be protected from, even on a farm, even in a big family where babies were being born all the time! The restrictions on basic knowledge about my body, the complete ignorance and denial about the existence of orgasmic energy, and the assumption by the culture that my body and my sexuality belonged not to me, but to my future husband created enormous confusion, pain, and suffering.

Add to that coming of age in the time of Feminist movement and the so-called sexual revolution, and I stepped out of the straightjacket and into a fire of further disinformation. More damage was done.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? 

My response to the noise was to retreat into marriage and children. It was familiar, who I'd been raised to be. Like my childhood,  in many ways it was a very good life. I say that my children and I grew up together. 

But as an adult, fully grown woman, all the spiritual, sexual and orgasmic aspects of my life that had been cloaked by expectations and fitting in, burst open.
